Getting Started with SMS Magic

This section will help you get started with sms-magic quickly. Various documents & videos in section will help you understand What & Why of SMS Magic product & offerings.

Glossary
  1. SMS - It stands for Short Message Service, also called a text message.

  2. MMS is an abbreviation for Multimedia Messaging Service, is a standard way to send multimedia such as pictures, videos, and other attachments over text messaging channels.

  3. Unicode SMS - SMS messages sent and received containing characters not found in the GSM-7 character set. An SMS allows up to 160 characters from the GSM-7 character set

  4. GSM-7 Set includes all Latin characters A, digits 0-9, plus a few special characters. link

  5. UTF-8 - is a variable-length character encoding standard used for electronic communication. Defined by the Unicode Standard, the name is derived from the Unicode Transformation Format – 8-bit,

  6. TCPA - The TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) is a federal statute enacted in 1991 to safeguard consumer privacy. This legislation restricts telemarketing via voice calls, SMS texts, and faxes. This is for the United States.

  7. Group SMS is messages exchanged between a group of people. Currently, this is not supported in business texting or WhatsApp using API.

  8. Bulk SMS is sending messages to a number of contacts belonging to a specific list. This is similar to campaign messages, bulk Sms instances are not tracked while campaigns can be tracked.

  9. SenderIds/VMN / Inbound number - All are interchangeably used for the phone numbers owned by the Business that originate the text messages. In some countries like India, SenderIds is alphanumeric, so users can not do 2-way messaging.

  10. SMS Template - Predefined text with variable fields can be used while sending messages.

  11. Conversation - 2-way message exchanges between two entities -B2B or user-to-user

  12. Account- The 'Account' represents an organization or a business that is a part of the sales procedures.

  13. Master/Child Account- A Master/Child Account is a method to define the hierarchy of accounts. For example, Business HQ is the master account, and Branch offices are its child accounts. The master account allows us to set up the hierarchical relation between child accounts.

  14. Account ID - Your 8-digit account identifier with SMS-Magic. For SMS-Magic’s USA datacentrer, it starts with the digit 8, e.g., 80012121. For the EU data center, it starts with 7, e.g., 70012121.

  15. API Key - Identifier used to authenticate API calls from your account. API Key needs to be used when you want to access SMS-Magic services via API. For more information, please check the SMS-Magic API Documentation.

  16. Webhook - A webhook is an HTTP-based callback function that allows lightweight, event-driven communication between 2 Application programming interfaces.

  17. Business Hours - Set your Business' Working Hours, and no messages will be sent outside them. This feature will help you comply with telecom regulations, which ask businesses to send messages only during designated office hours. E.g. In some countries, you can only send messages between 9.00 am to 9.00 pm. 

  18. Campaign - Used to send out bulk campaigns to up to 50K recipients. This feature is used to send SMS blasts to a large audience and help you track progress.

  19. Contacts - Store the recipient's mobile numbers as contacts for future reference. If your business doesn’t integrate with a CRM, you can directly store your contacts here.

  20. Converse Desk - Used to have a 1-on-1 conversation with the recipients and manage them via Inbox. This helps Sales/Customer Service representatives to efficiently do 1-on-1 conversations with multiple customers simultaneously.

  21. Coverage - List of Countries to which your Business sends messages.

  22. Number Credits – These are the number of incoming numbers you want to purchase from SMS-Magic. Consumed when you provision an Incoming Number from SMS-Magic.

  23. SMS Credits – SMS credits are considered to be the currency of SMS messaging. A certain number of credits are necessary to send a message. SMS credits will be consumed for every message that you send (based on the length of the message).

  24. Numbers or SenderIds

    1. Long Code or 10DLC - SMS Long Codes are 10 Digit Numbers and are tied to an Area Code, For e.g. (XXX) XXX- XXXX. 

    2. Short Code - SMS Short Codes are 5-6 Digits (Look Like '69488', Which Pizza Hut Uses) and can only be used to send and receive SMSs, Not Faxes or Calls.

    3. Toll-Free Number - Text enables your toll-free numbers to use voice and text. TFNs typically start with 8xx.

  25. Subscription Management or Consent Management – This is the NDNC Compliance feature. Manage recipient opt-ins and opt-outs or consents, system-wide or for individual sender IDs. 

  26. User - An account can have multiple users. Each user can separately login and access SMS-Magic Web Portal services.

  27. User License- User license allows the users of the account to access all apps in your company.

  28. Customer Care Window – A WhatsApp messaging session starts when a user sends your business a message and lasts for 24 hours in the most recently received messages window. This active window is the Customer Care Window. You can send regular text messages or media messages (i.e., any non-template messages) in this 24-hour active window.

  29. Registered WhatsApp Template Registered WhatsApp Template messages are pre-approved message templates called MTMs for outbound notifications such as delivery alerts and appointment reminders. They cannot be used for marketing. You must use a WhatsApp Template Message if more than 24 hours have elapsed since the user last responded to you. Any other type of message will fail.
